Tavy Bridge Estate – Thamesmead, Kent

The Tavy Bridge Estate in Thamesmead is a large development of 1960’s low and high rise social housing.
Since they were first built over 40 years ago, the 18 blocks of 12 storey flats have little or no improvements made to their thermal performance or indeed their aesthetics.
The blocks are constructed of a concrete frame with solid, precast concrete panels as infill. With no cavity to fill with insulation, and no opportunity to decant the numerous tenants, it was decided that the best solution to both thermally upgrade and remodel was to use the Alsecco Ecomin 200 External Wall Insulation (EWI) system.
In order to brings the thermal performance of the walls up to current standards, 60mm of mineral wool insulation slabs were applied to the outside of the building. For the majority of the façade, white textured render was chosen because of its clean lines and brightness. At the ground floor, in an effort to create a robust presence, Alsecco’s flexible brick slips were applied to the EWI system.
These two blocks are just the first phase of the regeneration of the Tavy Bridge estate with a further 16 blocks to follow over the next ten years.
